A pumpkin-headed figure and a witch share the frame in this Hallowe'en postcard, a combination that was common in the holiday's printed greetings of the early 1900s. Postcards like this one were produced in large runs and mailed between friends and relatives, often in the weeks before October 31. Their bright colors, exaggerated faces and playful scenes reflected how the holiday was then being shaped in America, moving away from its older folk roots toward a lighthearted, family-friendly celebration of harvest and costumes. Pumpkins, black cats and witches appear again and again in such cards, so the pairing here is typical of the genre while still showing the period's taste for whimsy.
