Its title, *The Haunted Lane*, promises a ghost story, and the card is one of the stereographs made for parlor viewing around 1898. Two nearly identical photographs printed side by side on the card merge into a single three-dimensional scene when seen through a stereoscope, which gave the lane depth and shadow that a flat print could not. Stereocards of this period often used staged scenes with costumed figures and dramatic settings, and they were sold in sets as home entertainment. The catalog credits the maker only as "Melander," so the card's exact origin is uncertain, but it reflects the late Victorian taste for spooky tales.
