In this etching, the figure is not the witch herself but her daughter, a choice that shifts the story toward inheritance, fear, and the uneasy place of a child raised among the supernatural. Frederick Stuart Church, an American illustrator active in the 1880s, produced many fantasy and folklore subjects, and his fine line work suits the eerie mood of the scene. Witch imagery drew Victorian audiences partly through older tales and the long memory of the Salem trials, which helps explain why such scenes still feel at home on a Halloween board.
