A color woodcut from 1951 that casts a cat as the witches' companion, a pairing that carries centuries of folklore. In early modern Europe, black cats were often regarded as witches' familiars, animals thought to share in their magic, and that belief fed the witch trials of the 1500s and 1600s. By the mid-20th century, the witch-and-cat scene had become a staple of American Halloween imagery in cards, posters and printed ephemera. Woodcut suits such a subject, since its bold, simplified shapes give the figures a stark, folkloric quality.
