Gathering pumpkins in the Yakima Valley of Washington is the subject here, a working farm scene rather than a holiday celebration. The stereograph was issued by B.W. Kilburn of Littleton, New Hampshire, a publisher whose card views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which fused two nearly identical photographs into a single image with apparent depth. Dated around 1904, it dates from a period when irrigated land in central Washington was being settled and planted, and it records the field labor behind the autumn harvest that would later find its way onto porches each October.
