A witch soars across the front of this card on a broomstick, a lantern swinging from her hand, the kind of image that made Halloween postcards a popular holiday keepsake in the early 1900s. Cards like this were printed in large runs and mailed between friends and family in the weeks before October 31, often with bright colors, embossed borders and short rhyming greetings. The lantern and night sky point to the older folk tradition of Halloween as a season of lights, shadows and playful mischief, while the cheerful witch reflects how the holiday was softened for children and home celebrations. Look closely at the printing and the way the figure is framed, since these details show how the commercial card trade shaped the way Americans pictured the holiday.
