Lantern-faced pumpkins and black cats share the center of this Halloween greeting card, a pairing that was already a fixture of American holiday imagery by the early twentieth century. Postcards and cards of this kind were mass-produced in large numbers, often printed in bright chromolithographic colors, and sent to friends and family in the weeks before October 31. Their bold outlines and playful scenes reflected a shift in the holiday from its older rural harvest and folk customs toward a more festive, child-friendly celebration. Look closely at the cats' arched backs and the carved grins on the pumpkins, which show how illustrators turned a spooky theme into something cheerful.
