A witch rides across a moon-lit sky beside a perched owl and a grinning jack-o'-lantern, a stock scene that turned up again and again on early twentieth-century holiday postcards. The "Halloween Precautions" wording gives this card its joke: the lighthearted warnings printed on such cards played on fears of pranks and mischief that were common at the time. Halloween was then still largely a holiday for children and young adults, and cards like this were sent as playful greetings. The bold colors and exaggerated figures reflect the printing methods of the era, which made inexpensive, eye-catching postcards widely popular.
