Few holiday designs from the early twentieth century carry as many motifs at once as this one: a witch, an owl, and a jack-o'-lantern-headed scarecrow share the same card. Postcards like this were mass-produced in the years around 1900 to 1915, when the picture postcard was at the height of its popularity and Americans mailed one another holiday greetings much as they later sent cards at Christmas. Halloween imagery of this era leaned on playful, slightly comic figures such as witches on broomsticks, owls, and carved pumpkins, drawn in bright colors, and the combination seen here reflects that lighthearted tradition.
