A Merry Halloween postcard, with its jack-o'-lantern, owl and black cat, is a fine example of the holiday imagery that flourished on greeting cards in the early twentieth century. Cards like this one were often printed in bright colors, with orange pumpkins, silhouetted animals and a crescent moon standing in for the night-time mood of the season. Halloween was then becoming a popular festive occasion in America, and postcards were a cheap, quick way to send a seasonal greeting to friends and family. Notice how the pairing of owl and black cat signals the nighttime, superstitious character that the holiday was building around itself.
