Titled simply *Halloween*, this picture is one of several holiday images grouped under the Pictorial America heading, and its record does not name a specific town, maker or date. The holiday grew out of the Celtic festival of Samhain, and by the late 19th century in the United States it had become a night of costumes, parties and games for children and young adults. Illustrated greeting cards from the early 1900s, often showing jack-o'-lanterns, black cats and witches, helped fix those images in popular memory, so the picture is worth viewing as part of that wider visual tradition.
